DES514: A Beginning

Welcome one and all who have in all likelihood stumbled across this by accident, I will start of by pointing out that this is a student blog on my process of completing module DES514 3D Innovative Design, from start to finish...So bare with me!

Lets Start where everything starts, Day One. The Brief!

There was a lot of back and forth whether i thought 3D design was the best module for me this year, being final year every move and grade and final outcome is of the utmost importance because realistically its the most recent work employers will look at and within 10 months that would be my biggest concern. I have worked in industry so i have a fair understanding what employers want and how focusing on everything and taking on too much and in the end being mediocre overall isn't going to sell you to any particular job, well no job your bank balance wants.
I've known the last few years that 3D is the all rounder seller for my particular skillset, i have enough other modules and projects to show off other skillsets but 3D is the icing on the preferable CV cake.
Problem with that is 3D Design although i love the outcomes and the general idea that 'if you can think it you can make it' i personally find it difficult.
At this point choosing modules that will benefit me in 10 months time was the primary aim however other factors had to be included in this decision, final year without it be said comes with a massive workload but i also have work and family commitments to think about, which wasn't as big a factor as in previous years, So the decision to take on a work heavy difficult module didn't come lightly, but fingers crossed it pays off in the end in comparison to easier modules would've!

Knowing my limitations and skills meant i stepped into this module on day one knowing the level of work ahead especially if 3D Design software has never come naturally to me in the past. I knew what i needed from the chosen brief, and i knew it wasn't going to be easy.

First Ten Minutes on Day One: Welcome to the next 4 months of your life !
There were four briefs, a two parter Bunker project, a character design  and a concept piece for the DVLA.

Instantly excited!
These are all live projects ! Meaning purpose, time management, a level of accountability, networking and of course looks better than i did this for reasons other than 'just because'.

As always the first time you see a brief you panic, everything looks great and horrible all at once, its a very overwhelming choice, and to progress in brainstorming for the rest of the lecture to get the ball rolling and starting off on the best foot you need to make a decision there and then. all panic stations are a go at that point of course.

Although i thought more about it before the next class and had a better handful of reasons for my choice, my initial thought process after a quick scan over the 6 page booklet was:

DVLA. personally sounds more games design and the use of unity, both of which i have some experience in, so that's covered, games tend to be low poly and lack finer features as the user will be moving too fast over a large scale area to be noticed and that's not what i intend to pursue after graduation. - Maybe Bundle.

Character Design, Normally this project would've been my go to, as it is my area of interest and possibly very useful networking opportunities, but like my choice in module i couldn't just pick what i'm best at and what i've done many times before, that wouldn't give me the different and extra piece i need from this module. It needs to be something my CV is lacking. - No Bundle

Bunker Project, Prt Two, Character Design. The general 'recreate the past' idea of this project goes hand in hand with the Bunker Project itself, infact when i first read it i thought they were all apart of one project. The downsides of this project were the same as the character design brief, although interesting and both have very specific target audiences to be determined and it will shape it into something id really enjoy as a project, it doesn't feel like that thing my CV and Portfolio is missing. -Maybe Bundle

Bunker Project Prt One, Reconstruction. Now this project potentially spoke the least to me artistically. In terms of things i was missing in my CV tho this was on the button.
The more i discovered and brainstormed about this project the more i was interested.
Unlike the others this projects outcome had a far wider creative scope and felt although it initially seemed the most limiting it had the potential to be different in so many ways depending on the artist. -YES.

By the end of this class I had decided on the Bunker Project and had plenty of reading and watching material on users and user experience to keep me busy until the next class.
As a whole this 3D class wont differ from previous years 3D classes in terms of expectations and delivery, However the user will. This won't just be for the lecturer or yourself, there is a whole new level of accountability and collaboration that at this point so excited for and weary of, because of this the USER was thought process numero uno.

Knowing my talents and current limits at this point i intend to make mine stand apart by focusing not on the the reconstruction from ground level but on the users experience.
